I spend most work days at various clients, and I spend a lot of the day wanting a cup of coffee. Most offices have a kitchen where you can help yourself to coffee. The problem is that if you do not work at the office, it is unlikely that you will have have a cup to use. In some offices the business has a supply of mugs, in which case they will all be the same, and it is not to much of an issue which one you take, but in most cases each employee brings their own mug to work. People normally chose to bring in a mug specific for them selves. It will have a saying, or a photo of their children, or a cartoon of a unicorn shitting a rainbow out its arse. This means that white mugs are not normally owned by anyone, and can be used. I am not the only person who has thought this.
